Karen Rinaldi, SVP/Publisher
Karen Rinaldi previously led two publishing companies to success, joining Bloomsbury PLC at the inception of its US division in 1999, and growing the company to five divisions publishing more than 300 titles per year. She also served on the Bloomsbury PLC Group Operating Board 2004–2008. Among the bestselling authors Rinaldi published were Anthony Bourdain, Ben Schott, Susanna Clark, Chelsea Handler, Alan Hollinghurst, Shannon Hale, and many more.
From 2008–2011, Rinaldi was Publisher and General Manager of Rodale Books, where she served on the Executive Management Committee. At Rodale, she focused on health-related titles and worked closely with the Direct Marketing team and magazine brands to develop and run the most successful books program in Rodale’s history. Among Rinaldi’s bestselling authors were Al Gore, Dr. David Kessler, William Davis, M.D., Howard Schultz, Alicia Silverstone, and Ted Danson.
Under her imprint at HarperCollins, Harper Wave, Rinaldi is leveraging her extensive publishing experience to create and publish a list of broad-based health and wellness and lifestyle titles, categories that stand to make the most of what new platforms, distribution, and marketing have to offer.
Julie Will, Executive Editor
Julie began her career at Random House in 2002, working at Bantam Dell and Harmony Books. In 2007 she moved Rodale, where she developed branded properties and helped to build the trade list, editing such bestselling books as David Kessler MD’s The End of Overeating, P90X superstar Tony Horton’s Bring It!, and the The Biggest Loser series. She then left publishing to spend a year in the start-up world at Opensky.com, where she was the Executive Talent Producer for the site’s healthy living vertical, working with food and wellness authors including Bobby Flay, Alicia Silverstone, Mariel Hemingway, and Dr. Frank Lipman. In 2012 she joined Karen at HarperCollins to launch the Harper Wave list. Julie’s focus for Harper Wave includes diet and nutrition, science and psychology, inspirational narrative, food and cooking, self-improvement, and healthy lifestyle.
Brian Perrin, Senior Director, Marketing and Digital Product Development
Brian Perrin has 20 years’ experience in the book business and brings a full 360-degree view of the industry to Harper Wave, having worked as an Editorial Director and Associate Publisher (Running Press), marketing manager (William Morrow), rights buyer (Doubleday Direct), retail buyer (BarnesAndNoble.com), and digital-product developer (Rodale and NBC Universal). As a former Executive Director of Digital Product Development at HarperCollins, he won two consecutive Digital Book Awards and was closely involved with expanding the company’s non-traditional and digital marketing channels. He has published enhanced e-books with authors ranging from Mehmet Oz and Jack Welch to Neil Gaiman and Harper Lee.
Sarah Murphy, Editor
Sarah Murphy began her publishing career at Little, Brown and Company, where she spent five years editing a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction before joining the Harper Wave team. She works on titles across the Harper Wave list, both narrative and prescriptive, and she has a particularly strong interest in women’s stories and voices.
Penny Anna Makras, Senior Marketing Manager
Penny Anna Makras began her career as a Publicity Assistant at St. Martin’s Press, working on fiction titles. In 2005, she joined AMACOM Books as a Special Sales Manager and then shifted into their marketing department, promoting their business, health, and self-help titles. She moved to John Wiley & Sons in 2009 as a Marketing Manager on a variety of non-fiction areas and worked closely on digital products and enhanced e-books. She joined HarperCollins in 2014.
Hannah Robinson, Editorial Assistant
A West Coast transplant, Hannah Robinson graduated maxima cum laude from the University of Portland in 2014, where she studied English and Spanish. In addition to completing two internships with HarperCollins Publishers, she has worked for a variety of publications, including South Sound Wedding & Event Magazine and Writers Magazine, where she served as Senior Editor. This is her first job in publishing.
Kate Lyons, Editorial Assistant
Kate graduated summa cum laude from SUNY New Paltz in 2014 where she studied English Literature and Linguistics. She has worked at both publishing companies and literary agencies on a variety of genres in the past, and now works closely with Julie Will on a diverse list of nonfiction from health and wellness experts, doctors, chefs, scientists, and teachers.
